The edition used for the video will be the Bayreuth production, directed by Patrice Chéreau, conducted by Pierre Boulez. We are inviting individuals to research and present one or more of selected topics in the first hour of each evening. Depending on the number interested, the slots could vary from 4×15 minutes, 3x 20 minutes, 2×30 minutes to the whole hour, with additional topics in the Discussion slots during the run of the show. Please let me know if you would like to present a topic.
You are very much encouraged to present a paper. Please let me know if you would like to cover a topic. Suggested topics include the following, but please do feel free to suggest any others you think should be there, including any you’d like to present:
- Libretto of opera for that night
- Leitmotif theory
- Vocal techniques
- Genealogy of the Ring
- Contexts:
- Political
- Literature
- Art
- Sociology
- Philosophy
- Prejudice, including antisemitism
- Influences on and by other composers
- Wagner’s other works
- Place in history
If you would like to come along, even for only one or two of the four nights, or only part of some of the nights, please let me know by email or phone as soon as you can.
Best wishes
Derek Williams
