PhD in Creative Music Practice
Andrew’s area of interest is audio-visual composition, particularly the combination of electroacoustic composition with abstract images in animation. His work starts with music made from the manipulation of recorded sounds, which he uses to create a sonic base for close integration with abstract animation.
Study No. 1
This work explores the relationship that can be achieved between sound and vision. It was inspired by the animator Oskar Fischinger (1900-1967), who’s ‘Visual Music’ matched music with animation, using simple shapes and colours in ever increasing complex interactions to complement and synchronise with the sound.
Study No. 1 was shown as an installation at the film festival EMERGEANDSEE in Berlin in February 2009.
Study No. 2
Study No. 2 explores the idea of space within the sonic image, sourced from the ambient noise recorded in a small room, a concert hall, and a small metal hut – augmented with manipulated sounds of table-tennis balls bouncing and water, bird and insect sounds. The spatial movements are matched with brightly coloured 3D animation, which makes use of Kandinsky’s colour theories to complement the shifting spatial perspectives of the sound track.
Study No 2 was selected for the Listening Room at the International Computer Music Conference 2011.
Study No. 3
Study No. 3: Foghorn Abstraction takes the image of a foghorn and audio recordings of the sea and the foghorn blast. These are increasingly broken down into their constituent elements as the work progresses. Each recurrence of the foghorn blast examines the constituent parts in different ways, returning at the end to the original peaceful sound of the sea.
Study No. 3: Foghorn Abstraction was selected as part of the inaugural exhibition in the Byte Gallery, Transylvania University, Kentucky USA in 2011, and will be performed at the Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium in August 2012.
