The PROKALO team is very happy to announce our first speaker this term – Dr Jim Lawson, Senior Lecturer in Architecture and Landscape Architecture with us here at the University of Edinburgh with his seminar titled:
A Theory of History and a Fifteenth century Building Programme:
Alberti and Sant’ Andre in Mantua
Abstract: Vitruvius’s terms ‘Firmitas’, ‘Utilitas’ and ‘Venustas’ have helped organise the architects’ thoughts since ancient times. However, the hierarchy of value that they can be taken to imply was not always applied. Alberti’s idea of architecture’s history made tacit acknowledgement of them but configured them differently. His recommendation to his patron of his proposal for the church of Sant’ Andrea in Mantua reveals the primary driver of design to have been considerations of utilitas.
