Do you think that sustainability is important?
Do you want to use your skills and expertise to get involved in a real-world project – one that’d not just look good on your cv, but do some good too?
Then Footprint is for you!
Set up by the Design School and open to students in every department and in every year across the University, Footprint is a project for anyone interested in social engagement and working with others – whether you’re a first year product designer or a PhD mathematician.
We will spend Innovative Learning Week working with PEDAL, assisting them in their aim to turn Portobello into a sustainable local economy. Through a series of workshops run by Pidgin Perfect, an energetic creative studio from Glasgow, we will work together on a project designed to promote and re-vitalise Portobello’s local high street, along the way talking to the community itself to find out exactly what they want, how we can be of help, and presenting our final ideas in a ‘flash’ event.
This is what we’ll be working on:
We will be working on one key aspect of Portobello’s sustainable aims: local currency. Local currency is increasingly recognised as a desirable option for communities wishing to be sustainable. In this week we will work together to identify a way to promote a local currency to the Portobello community as part of a wider project to revitalise the local high street. What we come up with is up to you!

PIDGIN PERFECT is a creative studio based in Glasgow, Scotland.
We build, produce, make and create as a means of bringing different people and different ideas together, putting the community at the heart of urban projects.
We work with clients across architecture, community, institutions, government, art and beyond.
We combine imagination, technology and craft to help make better communities for everyone.
Together with our wider ‘flight’ of talented collaborators bringing specialist skills to our projects we combine our unique understanding of creating space and place, as architects, with an ability to communicate direct to the public.
Our process therefore helps our clients to define meaningful architectural solutions and achieve results truly authentic to them.
Pidgin Perfect are Dele Adeyemo, Marc Cairns and Becca Thomas.
Pedal is Portobello’s local Transition group. We are working to create a vibrant, sustainable Portobello which can help combat climate change and reduce fossil fuel use. By creating a sustainable local economy, we believe that local life will be more enjoyable and will help the planet at the same time.
TRANSITION SCOTLAND Is a growing network of communities who are working towards a fossil-fuel-free world, at same time as making the places we live in more vibrant, productive, interconnected and rewarding. This website connects us and is run by and for people who’re working locally for a better future.
